BIO
Sophie Kahn earned a BA Fine Art/Art History at Goldsmiths, London and an MFA in Art and Technology at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited in New York, LA, Washington DC, London, Paris, Torino, Melbourne, Sydney, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, and Beijing. She has taught at Pratt Institute, and completed residencies at NARS, the Museum of Arts and Design, Pioneer Works and the Elizabeth Foundation. Kahn is a NYFA Digital and Electronic Arts Fellow.
Sophie Kahn’s work investigates the complexity, and the poetics, of capturing the body in the digital age. The 3D laser scanner she uses was never designed to capture the human body --when confronted with motion, the machine breaks down. She converts this damaged data into 3D printed sculptures and prints. The fragmented, damaged figures draw inspiration from memorial sculpture and archaeology, and could be read as faux-historical forgeries -- or contemporary relics.
